Christ the Light of Life

by Dust of the Saints

/

about

Based on the 1909 hymn by Harriet H. Pierson and arranged by D. B. Towner. David stumbled upon this hymn when searching for Advent hymns to sing during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He was drawn to the lyrics, which are stark yet hopeful. He made only a few changes to the original lyrics, and sought to create a slightly non-traditional arrangement that illuminates the overall message.

lyrics

Christ the Light of Life

When the clouds gather thickly and the shadows lie
Dark and deep across the way
we must tread from day to day.
There’s a light sent to cheer us;
see it gleams on high
Like a beacon in the midnight sky.

See the light, shining clear!
It’s the Christ that our longing eyes behold;
Brother, lead us on till the night is gone,
and the splendors of the morn unfold.

For the feet that have wandered from the path astray,
Lost in mazes dark and wild,
by false promises betrayed.
Still the day star is pointing to the shining way,
Leading upward to the gates of day.

See the light, shining clear!
It’s the Christ that our longing eyes behold;
Sister, lead us on till the night is gone,
and the splendors of the morn unfold.

Over hills comes the dawning with its radiance bright;
It’s the sun of righteousness
come to heal a world’s distress;
Soon those rays will illumine
all the earth’s dark night
With a glory from the heavenly height.

See the light, shining clear!
It’s the Christ that our longing eyes behold;
Christ will lead us on till the night is gone,
and the splendors of the morn unfold.
