I was particularly inspired by the account of the story I heard, describing how the participants wanted to deliver books and read to the children, and that they sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" (actually, they sang it in Spanish) outside of the facility where the children were staying.
I wrote this song to call attention to the children who are currently being detained, and the ongoing work that must be done by us all to bring about their liberty, reunification, and healing.
All proceeds from this song will go to support the work of Solidaridad Con Los Niños and to the work of trauma-informed art making.
lyrics
I want to read to the children.
I want to read to them today.
They are crying out for certain,
for the families you've taken away.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star
How I wonder where you are?
I'm waiting for the day
when hope itself will stay.
I'm watching for the star
to guide us to where you are.
I want to see all these children
carried upon their parents' arms.
And when they cry out it's for certain,
nobody would do them harm.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star
How I wonder how you are.
I'm waiting for the sun
to shine on everyone.
I'm hoping for the day
when love itself escapes.
I'm asking for their words
to be heard and to emerge.
I'm begging for your hand
to make this the promised land.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star
Now I wonder, how big, how tall?
Swept behind a forgotten wall,
let hatred stumble to love, let it fall.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little boy Jesus lay down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky look down where he lay.
The little Lord Jesús who's crying today.
